The BBC’s flagship singing contest returns for one last time on BBC, before switching channels to ITV. Paloma Faith and Boy George fill the two spinning chairs left vacant following Tom Jones’ departure and Rita Ora’s defection to The X Factor last year. Veteran coaches Will.i.am and Ricky Wilson return to take their place on the panel, along with presenters Emma Willis and Marvin Humes. The contest gets under way with the first of seven traditional `blind auditions’ stages, in which the four coaches must select their teams by assessing their vocal ability alone. Among the auditionees are a punk fan whose twist on a pop classic melts hearts on the panel, and a self-aware fishmonger whose performance includes plenty of piscine-themed puns to lighten the mood.
